“Honey, when I see your pretty little face, I jus’ wanna…”
The great mound of a man burst into tears, sobbing loudly and burying his face on Lindsay’s shoulder. She cringed slightly, but did her best to act friendly, patting Andrew on the shoulder. He must’ve been at least two meters tall, Lindsay thought to herself. She didn’t know why she kept coming here; visiting him always left her drained and depressed. Andrew was related to Lindsay through a tangled web of cousins, sisters, twice-removeds, and the like. She also knew that the suffix “-in-law” was in there somewhere, since she had never heard about him before her marriage.
Andrew suffered from an extreme case of mental retardation, developed since birth, and had long since been unceremoniously dumped at a psychological institute by a mother whose theory was “Kids are like pancakes: if one of them gets screwed up in the creation process, throw that one away and make another one.” Lindsay just couldn’t bring herself to leave him all alone. She was the only one who visited him with any sort of consistency, and stayed for more than a few minutes.
She had always wondered if she was making any sort of difference. One of the doctors who worked with Andrew told her that she should consider herself lucky if Andrew remembers her name. Yet here she was, watching as andrew cried uncontrollably, making strange, incoherent sounds. She thought about those words… “Pretty little face.” She was the only person that Andrew saw with any sense of regularity. Did he think of her as a sister? A wife? A daughter, even? And what was it that he wanted to do, so powerful that the thought moved him to tears? Had she gone too far with Andrew’s emotions?
All these questions would answer themselves in due time. For now, all Lindsay could do was provide a shoulder for the massive, shuddering man named Andrew, who had finally found a friend.
